Northwestern College to host creationist vs. evolutionist debate May 13

Geology professor/author and local science teacher to discuss Grand Canyon origins

ST. PAUL, Minn. – May 1, 2009

WHAT:
The Northwestern College science and mathematics department presents “Grand Canyon: Evolution or Creation,” a debate about how the Grand Canyon was formed. The discussion features creationist, geology professor and author Steve Austin debating against evolutionist, naturalist and local science teacher Steve Johnson. Ian Punnett of FM107 will serve as the moderator of the debate.

WHO:
Steve Austin, creationist, is the author of “Catastrophes in Earth History,” “Grand Canyon: Monument to Catastrophe” and “Footprints in the Ash.” He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree from San Jose State University and a doctorate from Penn State University – all in geology. Austin is the past chairman of the geology department at the Institute for Creation Research.

Steve Johnson, evolutionist, has been an elementary school science teacher for 35 years, was a guest sciences teacher at the St. Paul Science Museum and was a naturalist for seven summer seasons at Yellowstone National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. He has a bachelor’s degree in forestry and physical geography from the University of Minnesota.
